From Philadelphia to Scranton voters said no to Republicans. In Philadelphia, a third-party maverick candidate beat the GOP to capture an at-large City Council seats reserved for minority parties — a seat Republicans have held for decades.
In the suburbs of Delaware and Chester Counties voters rejected both Republicans and establishment Democrats. Democrats will hold all five seats on the Delaware County Council, a Republican stronghold since the Civil War, and also assumed a majority on the legislative body in Chester County.
The political forces that colored last year’s midterm elections continued to dominate. In Bucks County, Democrats also held a late lead for control of the board of commissioners in a close race.
